Hang tight while we prepare your form...
Yes, it is that time of year when the church is asking you to prepare to fill out a pledge card.
What will you give?
That is what stewardship is all about. Giving a portion of our income back to God.
“How much will you give to the church in 2018?” is the question asked on the pledge card you will receive in a few days.
My apologies. Allow me to start over. I got it backwards.
We begin with receive. We receive the love and grace of God. We receive the gift of life and community. We receive the gifts of personhood and uniqueness. We receive the ability to laugh, cry, empathize, remember, hope, and dream. We receive …… it goes on and on.
We begin with God’s gifts to us. God gives himself to us.
When we say we ‘give back to God,’ it is indeed a poor choice of words. I’ll work on some better stewardship phrases. Maybe you can help me. We are not paying God back, or helping God out, or tipping God. God does not need our money to be God. We give up, return, give back a portion of our income as an acknowledgement.
We acknowledge that God is the source of all gifts. God is the source of our ability to have anything. Giving is an act of worship and thanksgiving.
As you scroll through this page, you will see how your gifts are used to ‘give back’ to the church, community and world through our various ministries. But first, give thanks to God for all you have received. That is where it all begins.
With Thanksgiving and Gratefulness,
Rev. Catherine Nance
