Christmas Music Recital
Shelley Maddox (soprano) and Dr. Jennifer Anderson (piano) perform a recital of Christmas music in the beautifully decorated Sanctuary on this afternoon.
You are invited to REJOICE in the season with a selection of familiar carols, spirituals and songs of the season that include:
The spiritual, Roun' de Glory Manger, was originally arranged by Jacqueline B. Hairston for a world famous opera singer, Kathleen Battle. It is a rhythmic and lively telling of the story of Jesus' birth.
Mark Hayes' unique arrangement of I'll Be Home for Christmas has a sound reminiscent of a mid-century jazz club.
One of Shelley's favorite selections on the program is In the Bleak Midwinter arranged by Mack Wilberg, Music Director of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. It is a simple setting of the beautiful Christina Rossetti text that invokes a sense of utter calm. In complete contrast, Shelley and Jenny chose another Mack Wilburg arrangement. In Deck the Hall, you will hear the traditional melody floating above a very quick and complex accompaniment that makes the arrangement much more interesting than the traditional carol!
You may also hear a familiar selection from a beloved holiday movie. Its beautiful simplicity holds a special place in the hearts of both Shelley and Jenny.
The program will close with two arrangements by our very own Director of Music, Dr. Dwight Dockery . His virtuosic interpretation of Joy to the World is full of text painting and interesting twists on this familiar classic. Silent Night is the last selection of the afternoon, and Dwight's arrangement perfectly captures this well known text and tune in a way that most certainly evokes a sense of heavenly peace.
The musicians are requesting that everyone wear a mask to this event.
