Sing in Exultation: Chancel Choir Christmas Cantata (Evening Presentation)
Singing is an integral part of our celebration of Advent and Christmas. This is even reflected in the texts we sing during this time of year; that is, we sing about singing. We are called to sing ourselves — “On Christmas night, all Christians sing…” (Sussex Carol); “and heaven and nature sing” (Joy to the World). The heavens and all angels sing — “Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation; O sing all ye citizens of heaven above!” (O Come, All Ye Faithful); “heavenly hosts sing Alleluia” (Silent Night); “Angels we have heard on high sweetly singing o’er the plains” (Angels We Have Heard on High). Mary sings a lullaby to the Christ Child.
This year’s Chancel Choir Christmas Cantata features new arrangements of familiar carols as well as some we have grown to love. There are also original compositions in the mix.
You might notice two names that appear prominently on the list of composers — John Rutter and Taylor Scott Davis. Rutter celebrated being knighted this year, and Davis’s arrangements are new works conceived for the vocal ensemble Voices 8.
As has been our tradition, the Chancel Choir and Orchestra will present the Cantata during the 10:30 am worship service and again at 7:00 pm. The latter presentation will be recorded by WVLT for airing Christmas Eve/Day.
